According to many studies, women have bridged the gap between them and men in technology use. These studies also show that African American women use technology five times more than other women. This explains why it’s an ego-killer for many black women to know the industry of technology isn’t well-diversified beyond the usual groups of people — white people and males. In general, technology provides the means to connect to the world and advance the overall standard of living, but, for black women, technology is more so used as an empowering tool for encouraging them to move forward.
The number of African American women in technology is increasing but not as fast as some would like. With this in mind, in order for black women to flip their interest in technology into a career, they have to accept the cards they’re given by overlooking the divisions and climbing over existing barriers. Many women have successfully managed to accomplish this feat, so it’s not impossible. As previously stated, there are various organizations that cater to the needs of black women who have an interest in technology.
